Following the launch of Sungi Mlengeya’s exhibition (Un)Choreographed and the subsequent panel A New Dawn: Reflections on Body and Movement, the curators have developed two stimulating workshops that will expand on the theme of female empowerment in the exhibition. The workshops will highlight female artists using unique, non-traditional art forms or concepts by two London-based artists from the African diaspora. Siphiwe Mnguni’s workshop will explore the use of shape, movement, and line. Inspired by Siphiwe’s abstract figure artworks and dual cultural heritage, participants can engage with concepts around self-exploration, identity, and reconstructing the female gaze.
Shannon Bono’s beginner’s life drawing class will expand on the belief that all Black women are muses encouraging us to see and depict their light through art and our everyday encounters. Using herself primarily as a muse in her own work as a device to explore her own identity and history, Shannon has paid homage to a myriad of black women from professional football players to those who have been victims of police brutality.
