Notes on The Africa Centre/Victoria Miro event, 16.1.08

  1. On a cold night on January 16th 2008, the Africa Centre held an event at the Victoria Miro Gallery.

  2. The event was held to update the assembled crowd about developments at the Africa Centre...

  3. ...and to give them the opportunity to privately view the stunning work of international contemporary art star, Kenyan-born Wangechi Mutu.

  4. 170 (beautifully turned out!) guests showed up and drank champagne and a Kenyan cocktail known as a Dawa. We feasted on canapés provided by Saffron House…

  5. Oliver Tunde Andrews , Chair of the Africa Centre gave a speech encouraging guests and their colleagues to come forward and lend their support and ideas to the Africa Centre.

  6. James Lindon, Head of Sales at Victoria Miro Gallery spoke about their artist Wangechi Mutu and also the rise of African Contemporary Art market.

  7. Zina Saro-Wiwa spoke about how the Africa Centre is going to be a building with a specific dialogue and part of its job will be to unearth and deliver new African narratives to balance representation of the continent. She also showed excerpts of her film This Is My Africa.

  8. A good time was had by all…
