Margaret Feeny MBE
1917 – 2012
The Chairman and Trustees of the Africa Centre regret to announce the passing of Margaret Feeny MBE, who was the first Director of the Africa Centre from 1963 to 1978. She was, more than anyone else, responsible for putting the charity on the road to its historic role as a platform for Africa and providing a meeting-place for Africans in London in the post-independence era.
She related both to official and unofficial Africa, and as well as the emphasis on education that was there from the beginning, she always perceived the need to have a showcase for arts, culture and opinion. Margaret was also aware that it needed to be a broad and secular organisation catering for all the diversity that is Africa. We wish to acknowledge gratefully her commitment to the objectives of the Centre, which we share with all who value and seek to use it.
